Now Serving Rockingham Families
The Shenandoah County Soccer League is now serving families in northern Rockingham County.
In one sense nothing has changed. The League’s By-laws welcome participation from those residing outside Shenandoah County as long as they follow all the same rules and directives as everyone else, and children from outside Shenandoah County have played in the League for many years.
What is changing now is the League will now actively serve the families of northern Rockingham County, and openly encourages them to participate in the League’s programs. The League Board of Directors made this decision at the December 3 board meeting.

Why do this, and why do this now?
Northern Rockingham County families traditionally participate in soccer programs in Harrisonburg. Northern Rockingham County lacks the basic infrastructure needed to support recreational soccer (fields and goals), so families from that area drive south so their kids can play. They also pay fees that are more expensive than necessary to support a recreational program.
As a result of discussions with coaches and families in northern Rockingham County, the League Board of Directors realized our fields at the SoccerPlex south of Mount Jackson are closer to these families than the fields they’ve been driving to in Harrisonburg. SCSL’s primary focus is recreational soccer, and this is a better fit with what these families need than programs that focus on expensive competitive travel soccer. SCSL also has a long history of partnering with towns to place soccer goals in town parks so kids can enjoy free play as well as structured practices close to where they live.
Despite the unforeseen and significant setback of having to cancel the Spring 2020 season due to the pandemic, SCSL is ready to grow in 2021, especially the recreational programs that remain the core of the League. As soccer programs in Harrisonburg come and go and change leadership frequently,
SCSL can provide families in northern Rockingham County an affordable, convenient, and dependable recreational option for their kids.
SCSL also looks forward to working with the schools and towns in northern Rockingham County to establish the soccer infrastructure the area lacks.

When you register your children for the spring season, be sure to select the geographic region or affiliation that best describes where they attend school. SCSL always uses geographic information to build teams so players are with kids they are most likely to know. The ideal is to have at least one team representing each region in each age group each season.
